Article: THE MEANING BEHIND MAHI WAIRUA

THE MEANING BEHIND MAHI WAIRUA
Inspired by Whakapapa. Created with Wairua.
Mahi Wairua is more than the name of our brand.
It represents where we come from, what we create, and what we hope to carry forward for the generations that come after us.
Our journey didn't begin with Mahi Wairua. It began with CRE-eight, a small whānau-owned creative business in Murihiku, Southland.
As CRE-eight grew, so did we.
We started experimenting with different ways of creating — printing, apparel, UV printing, embroidery and personalised pieces. But over time, more and more of our mahi began drawing inspiration from our Māori culture, our whānau and our whakapapa.
Eventually we realised that the direction we were heading deserved an identity of its own.
That is where Mahi Wairua began.
What does Mahi Wairua mean?
Mahi speaks to work, action, creation and the things we bring into the world through our hands, ideas and effort.
For us, mahi is the physical part of what we do.
It is designing.
Printing.
Embroidering.
Making.
Learning.
Experimenting.
And turning an idea into something another person can wear, display, gift or carry with them.
Wairua takes us somewhere deeper.
It speaks to spirit and essence — the meaning and connection that can exist beyond the physical object itself.
And that became important to us because we didn't want to simply create things that looked good.
We wanted our mahi to mean something.
Grounded in whakapapa
Our whānau carries whakapapa connections to Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Hikairo and Ngāti Kahungunu.
Each has its own people, whenua, histories and kōrero.
We don't see Mahi Wairua as speaking for those iwi.
Instead, they are acknowledged as part of who we are, the whakapapa our whānau carries, and the foundation from which our own creative journey grows.
Whakapapa reminds us that our story didn't begin with us.
There were generations before us.
And there will hopefully be many generations after us.
That thinking has become an important part of Mahi Wairua.
Inspired by Whakapapa. Created with Wairua.
Those words became our statement because they capture what we want Mahi Wairua to stand for.
Inspired by Whakapapa acknowledges where we come from.
Created with Wairua describes what we want to put into what we make.
Not every piece we create will tell the same story.
Not every design will look the same.
And as Mahi Wairua grows, the tools and ways we create will continue to change.
But the kaupapa behind it should remain.
To create with intention.
To remember where we come from.
To keep learning.
To create something our whānau can be proud of.
And hopefully, to leave something meaningful for those who come after us.
This is Mahi Wairua.
