FROM CRE-EIGHT TO MAHI WAIRUA
Every journey has a beginning.
Before Mahi Wairua, there was CRE-eight.
CRE-eight began in 2024 as a whānau-owned creative business in Southland.
At the beginning, the idea was simple:
Create.
We wanted the ability to take an idea from our heads, turn it into a design and then physically make something from it.
We didn't know exactly where that would eventually lead.
And looking back, that's probably one of the best things about the journey.
Learning as we went
CRE-eight became the place where we learnt our craft.
We worked with printing and apparel.
We moved into UV printing.
We created mirrors and personalised pieces.
Then came embroidery.
With every new machine, process and idea, another door opened.
Some things worked.
Some didn't.
We made mistakes.
We changed designs.
We experimented.
We kept learning.
And slowly CRE-eight began developing its own identity.
Something started changing
As our skills grew, we found ourselves increasingly drawn towards creating mahi connected to Māori design, culture and whakapapa.
It wasn't a marketing decision.
It was simply the direction our creativity kept taking us.
The pieces that meant the most to us were often the pieces where there was a deeper kōrero behind what we were making.
That made us start thinking differently about the future.
CRE-eight had given us the ability to create.
But we began asking ourselves:
What do we actually want to create?
What do we want our business to represent?
What do we want our children to see when they look at what we built?
Those questions eventually led us somewhere new.
Finding Mahi Wairua
We spent time exploring different names and ideas.
We wanted something connected to creativity, but we didn't want the name to simply mean art.
What we were trying to describe felt deeper than that.
Eventually, with kōrero and input from our whānau, we arrived at:
Mahi Wairua.
And something about it felt right.
Mahi represented what we'd already spent years doing — creating, learning and working with our hands.
Wairua represented the part we wanted to strengthen — the meaning, connection and intention behind that mahi.
Suddenly the next chapter had a name.
CRE-eight isn't disappearing
Mahi Wairua isn't about pretending CRE-eight never existed.
Quite the opposite.
Without CRE-eight, there would be no Mahi Wairua.
CRE-eight is where we began.
It gave us the tools.
It gave us experience.
It gave us confidence.
And it gave us the freedom to discover the direction we actually wanted to take.
That's why you'll continue to see the words:
Powered by CRE-eight.
CRE-eight remains part of our story, and CRE-eight Clothing continues as part of what we create.
Mahi Wairua is the evolution of that journey — a wider identity and kaupapa that gives us room to take our creativity somewhere deeper.
What comes next
We're still building.
We're still learning.
And Mahi Wairua will continue to evolve just as CRE-eight did.
Our mahi already includes clothing, printing, embroidery, personalised pieces and creations for the home.
There are new forms of making we want to explore and new skills we want to learn.
But growth for us isn't only about having more products.
We want to become better storytellers through what we create.
We want to create pieces with meaning.
We want our whakapapa to inspire us without limiting our creativity.
We want to build something our whānau can be proud of.
And we want our tamariki and mokopuna to know where it all began.
CRE-eight was the beginning.
Mahi Wairua is the next chapter.
And we're only getting started.
MAHI WAIRUA
Inspired by Whakapapa. Created with Wairua.
